These paintings could all be considered self-portraits.
They are not efforts to depict the outer, material world
objectively or accurately. They are portrayals of inner
states and realms.
I initiate a painting with an idea, or a particular energy, or
an attraction to a color. After that, the color and emerging shapes themselves are so stimulating and directive
that most of the preconceived plan dissolves. My intuitive
understanding of what is coming through grows with the
creative process and spurs it on.
When I am painting, I feel like both a receptive channel
and an instrument of articulation.
